Partnership overview

Part of the congressionally chartered  nationwide Federal Home Loan Bank System, the Federal Home Loan Bank of New York (FHLBNY) helps community lenders in New Jersey, New York, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands advance housing and community growth.

In 2021, the FHLBNY engaged Impact Consulting to help them create and manage a mentoring program for a small group of employees. Focused on building a program specific to the needs of the FHLBNY, Impact served as consultant and lead resource to their mentoring program manager. Currently in the fourth iteration of the program, each year we have supported up to 18 mentoring partner pairs, 36 people in total.

Our solution 

Impact designed and delivered a 6-month mentoring program that provided the guidance, training, subject matter expertise and best practices to drive engagement and impact of mentoring partner relationships. Specifically:

  • Conducted a short baseline assessment to determine the group that should be mentored.

  • Assigned mentoring pairs based on user profiles and, in the first year of the program, utilized technology (Chronos platform) to help facilitate the pairing process.

  • Designed and delivered communications and training to support the program, including “Unleash the Power of Mentoring” and “Develop the Leader in You.”

  • Developed and distributed a Playbook and Resources guide for all participants.

Our impact

Each year, the FHLBNY participants rank the mentorship program as one of the top offered for career development. Specifically, the program has strengthened workplace culture by accelerating cultural evolution, supporting knowledge transfer, and by increasing employee engagement, learning and caring. In addition, the program has:

  • Promoted and supported inclusion by enhancing the exposure, networks, career development, and inclusion of all employees including, but not exclusive to, Black or African American and Hispanic/Latino.

  • Built leadership pipeline by investing in personal and professional development of next generation leaders, and helped bridge generational differences.

  • Empowered career development by helping to support and advance the ambitions and career goals of employee participants.

Promoted engagement and commitment by strengthening employee relationships, prioritizing professional development and encouraging inclusion.
