Partnership overview

The American Society of Hematology (ASH) is the world's largest professional society concerned with the causes and treatments of blood diseases. Its membership includes scientists and clinicians from around the globe dedicated to furthering the understanding of hematology as a discipline and, improving patient care.


As part of their diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts, ASH’s executive team required a partner to spearhead and lead the establishment of a DEI council and set the plan for the organization’s ongoing measurable and transformative goals. Specifically:


  • Work closely with the leadership team and the CHRO to ensure alignment across the organization.

  • Integrate DEI best practices for fostering an inclusive environment.

  • Tailor programs and training to the nuances of global Society members.

Our solution 

Serving on retainer with the DEI program office, we partnered with the executive team to establish and drive a multi-phase DEI plan with a transformative impact across executive leadership, organizational staff, and members.  


  • Established a multi-phase, multi-year DEI plan with measurable DEI goals across five target areas. Specific focus on HR practices, employee engagement, and measurement & accountability.

  • Trained all internal team members and senior members of the global executive committee on unconscious bias and inclusive leadership.

  • Created, implemented, and analyzed a DEI pulse survey to track progress from inaugural survey.

Our impact

We established a solid framework for ASH to advance DEI outcomes. By clearly articulating project goals and improving communications, we increased favorable awareness of DEI programs across the organization.


  • Measurable increase in the connection and engagement of staff, as well as the accountability of senior leaders.

  • Participants in training increased self-awareness around bias and empathy toward diverse groups.

  • Improved patient outcomes by extending DEI best practices to the membership community leading to increased awareness and improved health equity and inclusive workplace outcomes.
